Fascinating Korean Oaks In Store
The Korean Oaks will be run at Busan Racecourse on Sunday afternoon and all the ingredients are in place for it to be a fascinating affair.
Yeongcheon Derby was named in honour of another race – a race, the Korean Derby, that her half-brother Yeongcheon Ace won in 2015, but she enters having won four of her five starts so far with her only defeat a game 5th in the KRA Cup Mile, the first leg of the Triple Crown in April. She looks a promising talent but will have to overcome a wide draw as she attempts 1 1⁄8 m for the first time.
Yeongcheon Derby isn’t the only filly with auspicious relations as Blue Flag is a “full” sister to 2014 Grand Prix Stakes winner Gyeongbudaero. She’s one of two entries for the country’s leading trainer Kim Young Kwan with the other, Gyohaksangjang, also a leading contender for Kim, who won the race four years in a row between 2013 and 2016.
Franco Da Silva gets the leg-up onto Gyohaksangjang as the jockey looks to complete a Derby/Oaks double having won the colts’ Classic on Ecton Blade in May. There is other foreign interest as well with Japanese jockey Yuri Takahashi riding Queen Of Captain and Irish trainer Thomas Gillespie sending out the well-fancied YeonghuiSidae. The Hansen filly has won 6 of her 11 races.
Seven of the sixteen runners have made their way down from Seoul. Special Stone and Nike Street both look to have the potential to get better while Fire Wind was the only filly to run in the Derby this year. She only managed to finish in 7th place but will be expected to be much closer here.
The sixteen-runner filed contains six last-start winners and no fewer than twelve who managed at least a place on their latest appearance. The Korean Oaks is race 5 on a six-race Sunday card at Busan with the 1st race at 12:40pm and the last at 5:10pm local Korea time.
