A pair of Chris Waller runners who performed well through the Brisbane Winter look set to showcase their ability at Rosehill on Saturday.
The first is Youngstar who contests the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m).
The daughter of High Chaparral impressed through the Brisbane Winter, claiming The Roses and Queensland Oaks before a luckless third in the Queensland Derby.
Youngstar showed she’s returned in good order this spring with a fast closing sixth in the Tramway Stakes (1400m) behind Comin’ Through (Replay Below).
Form out of the race has already held up well with Le Romain and Egg Tart placing behind Winx last Saturday in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
A week later, Youngstar can give the form a further push.
The mare will be fitter second up and better suited out to the mile.
Arguably the most pleasing thing about Youngstar is the fact Saturday’s Shannon Stakes is comprised of just seven runners.
Youngstar’s tendency to settle back was her undoing in a capacity Queensland Derby field however on Saturday in a field of seven, the Chris Waller-trained mare won’t have to spot the early leaders a massive start turning for home.
In a Group 2 which shapes as being thin on depth, Youngstar is expected to capitalise.
The feature event of the day is the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) where Chris Waller has a strong hand to play with The Autumn Sun, Lean Mean Machine and Zousain.
The Autumn Sun is currently the market elect of the trio however the value play is Lean Mean Machine.
A winner of the Group 2 QLD Sires’ Produce (1350m) during the Brisbane Winter Carnival, Lean Mean Machine hit the ground running first up in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) where he settled back and charged home for a three-quarter length victory.
The Zoustar colt beat the current Golden Rose favourite Graff on that occasion and there is plenty to suggest history will repeat despite the marking indicating otherwise.
Both colts were luckless in the Run To The Rose (Replay Below), Lean Mean Machine overcame severe interference at the top of the straight while Graff travelled three wide with no cover throughout.
It was Lean Mean Machine who prevailed and likely takes more upside into the race being only second run from a spell compared to Graff who enters it third
History also bodes well for Lean Mean Machine with three of the last four Run To The Rose winners, Hallowed Crown (2014), Exosphere (2015) and Astern (2016) claiming the Run To The Rose/Golden Rose double.
