She bolted up in 2016 and then made things difficult for herself before ultimately prevailing a year ago.
This Sunday, Indian Star is back at Seoul and bidding to win a third consecutive Jeju Governor’s Cup, a Group 3 test for fillies & mares over 7 f.
INDIAN STAR was a 22/1 shot in 2016 when she came out of gate 11 and made all to win by a full four-lengths. She looked on course to do similar last year but veered in and out in the home straight before finally correcting herself and going on to win by a neck in a finish that saw the top-ten place-getters come home within four-lengths of one another.
Once more, Indian Star enters the race the highest rated by a considerable margin, but things haven’t been easy for her since last year’s triumph and she hasn’t raced at all since a nondescript effort in the SBS Sports Sprint in June. Nevertheless, the six-year-old by Adcat is the class horse of the field and under Franco Da Silva, she could well complete a hat-trick.
It’s a tough ask, however, with fifteen rivals out to stop her. They include two Korean Oaks winners; JEJUI HANEUL from 2017 and SPECIAL STONE from this year. Also going will be SEOURI BYEOL, who won the Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup only last month.
Top trainer Kim Young-kwan enters double-handed as he saddles BLUE FLAG, who was favourite in the Gyeonggi but came up short in 4th, as well as arguably the most intriguing entrant SUN DAY. The latter is an Ingrandire filly who has only run five times in total but has won four of them. A half-sister to top sprinter Today, she looks a big prospect and could well come out on top in what is her stiffest test to date.
Another up and comer is MIRACLE HANSEN with four wins from seven starts and who stretches out to seven furlongs for the first time. The Hansen filly be partnered by Japanese jockey Masa Tanaka, who won the MJC Trophy on her on international weekend last month. Meanwhile Brazilian jockey Antonio Da Silva will be aboard another Hansen filly SINUI MYEONGRYEONG, who has claims of her own. ICE MARINE and TOUR ROSE are other strong contenders in a race which could well see a finish as close as last year.
The Jeju Governor’s Cup is race 9 of an 11 race-card at Seoul on Sunday which runs from 10:45 to 18:00 local Korea time.
